Working principle of Vanadium Redox Battery (VRB)

Vanadium Redox Battery (Vanadium Redox Battery, abbreviated as VRB) is a REDOX battery energy storage system based on vanadium metal. The electric energy of the vanadium battery is stored as chemical energy in sulfuric acid electrolyte of vanadium ions of different valence states, and the electrolytic hydraulic pressure is put into the battery pile through an external pump. Under the action of mechanical power, it circulates in different liquid storage tanks and the closed loop of the half battery. The proton exchange membrane is used as the diaphragm of the battery pack, and the electrolyte solution flows parallel to the electrode surface and electrochemical reaction occurs. An electric current is collected and conducted through a double electrode plate, thus converting chemical energy stored in solution into electrical energy. This reversible reaction process enables the vanadium battery to be successfully charged, discharged and recharged.

The first phase of the National Photovoltaic Energy Storage Platform (Daqing Base) is located in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, China. The 125KW/500KWh all-vanadium flow battery energy storage system is an important part of this project, which aims to independently, fully and comprehensively verify the technical performance of all-vanadium flow batteries. Provide more accurate technical information and direct project experience for the subsequent application of the owner unit in a larger scope and scale. The average annual temperature in this area is only 4.2 ° C, and the extreme temperature in winter can reach -39.2 ° C, which is a great challenge for the all-vanadium flow battery system arranged outdoors. In the rigorous testing process of nearly four months in winter, the energy storage system has withstood the test of extremely cold weather, and the performance indicators have met the relevant specifications and requirements, and have been highly recognized by the owners.

This is China's northernmost all-vanadium flow battery energy storage project, according to the characteristics of the extreme climate conditions of the project, targeted design of container-type cold-resistant outdoor layout products. It can still operate stably in such an extremely cold environment, which proves the feasibility of all-vanadium flow battery technology, and also shows the good stability and reliability of the energy storage product.
